Everything you need to know about hair transplants

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a procedure to move hair to an area that’s thin or bald. When a dermatological surgeon transfers hairs from one part of the body, called the ‘donor site’, to a bald or balding part of the body known as the ‘recipient site’.

This technique is used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, and pubic hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants.

It was recorded that about 60% of males and 50% of females suffer from some or the other hair problems.

This technique was first performed in 1939 in Japan with single scalp hairs. After the advancement in the technological field, physicians developed the “plug” technique. This basically involves transplanting large tufts of hair.

Over time, surgeons began using mini- and micro-grafts to minimize the appearance of transplanted hair on the scalp.

Hair Transplant Cost

Usually, the cost of hair transplant treatment varies from person to person. It basically depends upon the individual hair loss and consequently the number of necessary grafts.

The average cost of hair transplants in India is in the range of INR 55,000 – INR 60,000. However, this is just a lump-sum figure, many clinics offer packages as well. There are various factors that need to be considered before deciding the number of grafts required or whether to opt for surgery.

The cost also depends upon the following factors:

  • type of hair you have
  • size of the transplant site
  • quality (including thickness) of hair
  • hair colour

Hair Transplant methods

There are two main hair transplant techniques that are regularly used:

  • FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Both these methods are effective in restoring thicker, natural-looking hair.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

In FUE hair transplantation, the surgeon transfers each individual follicular unit harvested from the scalp. The follicles of hairs are removed in a random manner, which allows the surgeon to move hair from the donor area with a less noticeable thinning of the area.  The follicular units contain 1 to 4 hairs that are removed under local anesthesia.

The surgeon uses very small micro blades or fine needles to puncture the sites for receiving the grafts, placing them in a predetermined density and pattern, and angling the wounds in a consistent fashion to promote a realistic hair pattern. The technicians generally do the final part of the procedure, inserting the individual grafts in place.

FUE gives very natural results. The FUE method is usually preferred over the FTU method because it negates the need for large areas of scalp tissue to be harvested, therefore there is no linear incision on the back of the head and it doesn’t leave a linear scar.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

Follicular Unit Transplantation Method (FUT Method) is also called Strip harvesting. It is one of the most common Hair transplantation techniques. In this procedure, the surgeon removes a piece of your scalp, usually from the back of your head. The strip size is typically about 6 to 10 inches long but can stretch from ear to ear. Each incision is planned in such a way that intact hair follicles are only removed.

The area is closed with stitches from where the scalp was removed which tends to leave a very fine linear scar. This is one of the disadvantages of this method.

Due to these reasons, FUT is sometimes preferred only for patients with long hair which will eventually cover the scar.

Once the extraction is done, the hairs are separated into groups by thickness, size of the bulb and number of hairs to make sure that there is enough variation to provide the patient with the most natural-looking result.
